#987 JOAL - PEGASO VOLQUETE (Nº212) (Around 1968)

It was a long time ago since I published an entry dealing wit the 200 series by Joal, so now it’s time to show another reference, in this case, number 212.

This number corresponds to a Pegaso tipper truck, where the tipper part is located in an articulated trailer. I guess this was done to reuse the unmodified truck cast for other references.

The truck is a Pegaso Comet, beautifully casted with orange base and light brown interior. The trailer is completely orange. A typical detail in all Joal models are the license plates, in this case A-0208-M, corresponding to Alicante, the province in which this toy was made.

The truck is made in an approximate 1:64 scale and it displays nicely together with other Joal models and 3 inches cars. The 200 series by Joal has only few references, but they are all quite fine.

#696 JOAL – MERCEDES BENZ 350 SL (N°124) (Around 1973)

Amazing model made by Joal in the early 70s. It is a Mercedes 350 SL in brown/gold color. It was also available in other colours (bright yellow, blue, red…), and also as part of car+trailer sets, for example with a roulotte or a boat.

This was one of the first models that came with this jewel case with yellow plastic base. Previously all models came in a green cardboard box, as seen in entry #406 or #523.

The car has practicable doors, bonnet and trunk, and came with two stickers. Other features are chromed hubcaps, chromed front and bumpers, plastic headlights and realistic steering wheel.

#661 JOAL – CHAPARRAL PROTOTIPO 2F (Ref. 113) and ADAMS BROS PROBE 16 (Ref. 118) (Around 1973)

These are three Joal models in 1:43 scale that my father bought a couple of years ago in a flea market. They are in great shape, although the Adams Bros is not 100% complete. It is missing the plastic roof, a very hard to find bit.

Joal chose a mixture of prototypes, ordinary and sport cars, and these are an example of sport and race cars, check also my entries dealing with the Renault 10, the Ferrari 512S or the Monza G.T. and the Alfa 1600.

 

 

We have mentioned several times that Joal usually "borrowed" designs from other companies like Tekno of Denmark, Polistil from Italy or Corgi from the United Kingdom, but we are not sure if the models are actual copies, licenses or if Joal bought casts from other companies. In the case of the Chaparral, it might be similar to a model made by Mercury, and the Adams Bros. Probe similar to Corgi´s. I cannot compare them, because I do not have these, only the two Joals, so this is only a guess.

 

As usual in Joal models, these were available in several colours each: the Chaparral is at least available in red, green, yellow, gold and blue, while the Adam Bros. Probe is available in red, green, blue, yellow and orange.

#523 JOAL – RENAULT 10 (Ref. 104) (Around 1969)

I always considered the miniatures from Joal to be great reproductions.

In some cases, Joal copied the models from Corgi or other major manufacturers from other countries. I think some are also based in Mercury models. The Italian die-cast manufacturer had many reproductions of Fiat cars, which were, of course, very interesting for Spanish manufacturers, since Seat models were equal to the Fiat models.

In this case, the car is similar to an old Norev model, although I cannot assure it because I cannot compare them. The quality of the Joal model is rather high, considering that it was made in the late 60s by a Spanish company (which had not the latest technology of that time). If you pay enough attention, you'll be able to see some imperfections.

The car is still in its green and white original box, the first model used by Joal. The same car was available at least in white, brown, blue and green. The original car was made from 1965 to 1971 (in Spain it was manufactured from 1966 to 1970).

#448 MEBETOYS/ HOT WHEELS! vs. POLISTIL vs. JOAL vs. MERCURY– FERRARI 512S PININFARINA (Ref. 6621, M13, 119 and 66) (1970 and 1971)

This model is in my opinion one of the most impressive prototypes ever made by Ferrari. The car was made for the Turin show of 1969 taking as a base the 512S (which was a race car) prepared by Pininfarina. The designer of this version was Filippo Sapino.

In this case I’d like to compare three models at 1:43 scale (two made in Italy, one made in Spain). A previous entry also talked about the same car in the same scale, but made by Mercury (#256). In that entry I already mentioned that the car was in construction quite similar to the model made by Mebetoys. You can review that old entry and judge yourself.

The interesting thing about these two cars, is that even they are the same scale, they look quite different: the length and the width are different, the windshield has a complete different forms, and the Mebetoys model is flatter than the Polistil one. How can this be? Being the car a prototype, it is very likely that the toy manufacturers never got the real measurements of one of the very few units made, so from photographs the designers tried to make some casts, that are very different among them, since each team had probably photographs taken from different angles, different distances and with different references.

I like all these models very much.

I’d like to start my comments with the Polistil model (red), which is the longest between these two. It has practicable bonnet and cockpit door and has a very impressive simulated motor under the bonnet and also on the chassis. It is also the only model between these two that has some stickers to decorate the sides of the car, and the bonnet is made in black with a red mesh, much more like the real car.

Mebetoys/ HotWheels model (green) is wider and shorter, and has clearly fewer detail than the Polistil model. Apart from practicable bonnet and cockpit door, it also has a practicable trunk (in the front) with a spare wheel inside. The chassis is a bit disappointing, since it has very fewer details, but this is compensated with the lights in/out feature that can be activated by pulling the tab on it.
The rear part of the car is also quite disappointing, because instead of casted, Mebetoys simply applied a sticker with the rearlights and the space for the license plates.
This model was available in blue, yellow (like the real model) or green, and in a later reedition, in red.

The hubcaps are very similar but those from Mebetoys looks better and have a better 3-D effect.
It is one of the models made during the last years of Mebetoys, after they were bought by Hot Wheels, but before they discontinued the Brand.

The Joal model is also based in the Politoys model, so there is not much more to say about it. The stickers are very nice, and the mixed colours in body and Bonnet gives it a strange looking.

 

The Mercury model, as said before, is unfortunately in a previous entry, so please visit it here, and compare all models together. Mercury seems to have taken as a reference the Mebetoys model, although it is hard to say, I haven't seen all four models together yet.
