This entry
will deal with a Scalextric car that has been made in many different versions
during many years: the Porsche 935.
In the year
1981, Scalextric brings a new idea to their products. Until that year, all car
models were released in different colours, but (except very few exceptions) with
the same decoration (the racing number may vary). Since 1981, and starting with
the Ford Fiesta and the Renault 5, there are additional decorations (stickers)
on cars.
This way,
with almost no additional costs, they could make an older model more attractive
to collectors and children, since changing the colour of the casts, plus the
sticker that were applied, can make a car look very different from the original
one. This is the case here, as we can see in the pictures.
The Porsche
935 was released in 7 different colours using 6 different sets of decals.

The first
model designed carried “Martini Racing” decals and represented the 935/78
Porsche, nicknamed “Moby Dick”, because its frontal resembles a whale. This
model was based in the 935/77, nicknamed “Baby”.
The car
participated in many competitions between 1976 to 1981, including the 24 hours
from Le Mans or Daytona, the 12 hours from
Sebring, the 1000 Km
from Nürburgring or IMSA, World and Germany championships. Further decorations
of the toy represented real cars from these competitions.
Back to the
toy, the weak points of this car are the exhaust pipes (chromed part) screwed
to the chassis. They break easily. Otherwise, the model is quite robust and
lacks of mirrors.
