#988 FIGURAS EN ACCIÓN (F.E.A.) Nr.25 (Especial TV)

This issue is full of toys related to TV contests and TV programs aired on the Spanish TV from the early 60s to around 1998, plus an extensive article dealing with movies whose main character is a toy. It is, so to speak, a thematic issue, from which we already made a few in the past.

The articles deal with the following TV Programs and toys.

-El Rescate del Talismán (known in Great Britain as Knightmare) - The Board Game

-El Gran Juego de la Oca - The Board Game

-American Gladiators - Action Figures by Mattel

-PVC figures of famous TV people and characters, made by Spanish manufacturers.

-Familia Telerín, the famous TV program and some of its merchandising.

-Movies with toys in a leading role.

-Lingo - The Board Game

-Transformers vs. G.I. Joe - Only Humans

It is the longest issue up to date (with 189 pages) and it was again a lot of fun and effort to create it together with the rest of the colleagues there.

As always, it can be downloaded from their official blog for free and without any need of registration or hassle. One click, and you have it.

#987 JOAL - PEGASO VOLQUETE (Nº212) (Around 1968)

It was a long time ago since I published an entry dealing wit the 200 series by Joal, so now it’s time to show another reference, in this case, number 212.

This number corresponds to a Pegaso tipper truck, where the tipper part is located in an articulated trailer. I guess this was done to reuse the unmodified truck cast for other references.

The truck is a Pegaso Comet, beautifully casted with orange base and light brown interior. The trailer is completely orange. A typical detail in all Joal models are the license plates, in this case A-0208-M, corresponding to Alicante, the province in which this toy was made.

The truck is made in an approximate 1:64 scale and it displays nicely together with other Joal models and 3 inches cars. The 200 series by Joal has only few references, but they are all quite fine.

FACTS AND FIGURES:

  • Name: PEGASO VOLQUETE
  • Scale: 1:64 (approx.)
  • Year: Around 1968
  • Company: Joal (Spain)
  • Size: Around 15 cm long

#986 INDIANA JONES - CRYSTAL SKELETON WITH THRONE (45027) (2008)

I already recalled in a previous entry, how did I get my Indiana Jones figures around 2010, when they were being sold out. I liked them very much, so I tried to collect a few more of them, not spending much money in them. Only 12 years after their release they are gaining value and the figures I am missing would cost me a lot of money if I wanted to buy them right now. I will be patient and wait until they are available at a low price.

In every figure I opened, there was a small flyer announcing the mail-away promotion with which you could get the crystal skeleton in its throne, as it appears in the final section of the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I kept looking at those leaflefts and I thought it was very cool, so I bought this set from a collector in Spain for a fair price.

The box got slightly damaged on one corner, but otherwise it is in a very good condition, and the contents are, of course, never played with. The surprise was to find that the Skeleton is much taller than the figures, so they got the proportions more or less right. It is made of a half-transparent plastic that looks simply great, and the throne is a big piece of plastic, but looks also fine.

It is a good addition to the collection. I thought this may be the hardest to find figure in the whole toyline, but there are many other exclusive figures (such as Disney World Exclusive) which are also very rare and valuable… with some patience I may get all these other figures I am still missing, who knows?

FACTS AND FIGURES:

  • Name: CRYSTAL SKELETON WITH THRONE (45027)
  • Toy Line: Indiana Jones
  • Year: 2008
  • Company: Hasbro (U.S.A.)
  • Size of the figure: Around 10 cm tall

#985 SZE TOY – BMW Turbo Group 5 (E21) (Around 1979)

Sze Toy or Szetoy is another Hong-Kong die-cast manufacturer from the early 80s, although when did it start and when did they disappear is unclear. It is sometimes confused with other brands such as Corgi or Yatming as they seems to use some common casts. Sze Toy sold their products under very different names, as they offered their products to retailers that packaged them under their own brands.

They have cars in different scales, other series of tanks and other sub-series of pullback-powered motors. My car is one of this latest group, and represents a toonified BMW M3 E30.

It belongs to the Mini Sprint Racers line, which were sold in bister cards and decorated with nice stickers (mostly a race number and some racing line or pattern on the roof). This seems to be one of the most modern models, as the others include a Honda Civic Ford Pinto Wagon from 1978, a Chevrolet from 1957 or a Volkswagen T1 Type.

Here are some blister examples of this series, they are all different.

UPDATE (JUNE/2022): I got two more models of the same style and wheels, although the pull-back motor seems older and they are not marked. One of them is precisely the red car shown in that last picture above, so the logo would be in the cardback, not on the toy directly.

The white car represents a BMW M3 and has reference number No. 901. The orange one, I am not sure about (maybe a Japanese model?), but it is No. 903. They are both marked Made in Hong Kong.

 FACTS AND FIGURES:

  • Name: BMW Turbo Group 5 E21 (Mini Sprinter Car series)
  • Scale: 1:64 (approx.)
  • Year: 1985 Around 1979
  • Company: Sze Toys (Hong-Kong)
  • Size: Around 5 cm

#984 YATMING –PONTIAC TRANS-AM, FORD MUSTANG TURBO COB and PORSCHE 944 (1060, 1067 and 1089) (Around 1989)

These Yatmings are “late” models, two of them made in China and the third one in Thailand. I got them in the late 80s, 1990, at latest, and have been in my collection ever since. They have die-cast metal bases, which was already, back then, becoming unusual in car miniatures. Still all three have practicable doors, which was also becoming rarer then.

So, while many manufacturers were simplifying their models and replacing metal by plastic, other simply moved to China and other far-east Asian countries. Yatming started in Hong-Kong, so didn’t have to move very far its production plant.

The Pontiac Trans-Am is a bit battered, but the other two are in very good condition. Unfortunately, the metal used in the base might not be the best, and it shows that typical roughness and it has an unesay touch. I hope it does not break or deteriorate anymore than that. Interestingly, they are only marked “Yatming”, plus the reference number of each model, but the name of the car is not casted.

I also thing they fit together well.

#983 MIGHTY MAX – CONQUERS THE PALACE OF POISON and TERMINATES WOLFSHIP 7 (1992)

These are two Doomstones I bought some years ago at a very low price. I do not collect this toyline, but I thought they were nice. Although they are copyrighted in 1992, they were for sale in Spain in 1993, and so they appear in Toys R’ Us Catalogue from Christmas 1993/94. They were priced at 1.495 pesetas, which is quite accurately 9 Euro, rather expensive considering its size, but not its quality.

The first of the two sets “Mighty Max Conquers the Palace of Poison” is my personal favorite as it involves an Egyptian pyramid, a mummy, and a giant scorpion, together with snakes, skeletons, tombs and treasures. Unlike many other playsets, this one opens in two halves, but has the head of the snake as some kind of tower, and both sides connect by means of a plastic cord.

The base has a small practicable tomb and lots of snakes and skeletons all over the floor, the tower part shows some stairs until up the mouth of the snake where a treasure is hidden. The other side has three floors: a basement dungeon, a first floor with the tomb of the pharaoh (the mummy is hidden inside) and the upper floor with god Anubis in his Throne.

The mummy is nice looking but the scorpion is much more attractive, as it is several times the size of Mighty Max.

The second set “Mighty Max Terminates Wolfship 7” is in principle very attractive as it involves a spaceship, robots and even a smaller spaceship, but personally I find the desing a bit repetitive and boring.

Note that the base represents the interior of a spaceship. It has two platforms that are the ears of the wolf when closed and can be expanded or closed. The central part with those two orange balls could be some kind of power generator, but I don’t know it for sure since I haven’t seen the cartoons. Another practicable part is the cannon that can aim to both sides.

The vertical part shows three floors, but they are all very similar On the upper one there is a throne.

The tip of the base, representing the fangs of the wolf can be detached and used as a personal spaceship. The robots are cool, but again, they only differ on the position of the arms, so I guess they could have done better here.

When closed, both playsets look great, either as a nested snake of a wolf-spaceship (especially with the ears out).

FACTS AND FIGURES:

  • Name: MIGHTY MAX CONQUERS THE PALACE OF POISON and TERMINATES WOLFSHIP 7 (Doomstones)
  • Toy Line: Mighty Max (wave 1)
  • Year: 1992
  • Company: Bluebird Toys (Great Britain)
  • Size of the Playset: Around 10 cm long
  • Size of the figure (Mighty Max): 1 cm

#982 POLFI-TOYS - RENAULT 17 (Around 1977)

Today, I bring some exotic model from Greece. It is the first time, I think, that a greek toy appears in the blog, so I am happy for that.

It is my first Polfi Toy, I think I bought it in the first months on 2020 from another collector in Austria. It is not in its best shape, but I payed only 3 euro for it. Most of the Polfi models I have seen have paint chips, so I guess they do not have the best paint work.

Greece, as Spain or Portugal had a relatively close toy market with their own national brands until the early 80s, and Polfi is maybe the best-known greek brand of toys, maybe not the most important, but probably one of the most successful, having sold many hundred thousands of die-cast models like this one but also in bigger scales, motorbikes and even planes.

Some of these 1:55-1:64 cars seem to be copies of Matchbox models (except for a few Formula ones, which look like Polistils), while some 1:43 models knock-off the cheap series of Polistil, although it is fair to say that they also had their own models.

The Renault 17, as I said, looks very much like the Matchbox model from 1974, but it is not a knock-off. Some details mark clear differences with the British model. The base is completely different, and also the wheels have a nice casting that looks like an off-road tyre.

I am sorry the pictures are not good, and even the colour is kind of different, I think the flash is distorting the colours, that look a bit brighter than they actually are. The model is dark orange, almost red, which, by the way was also the colour that Matchbox chose for the Renault 17. I will try to replace them as soon as possible.

I would say Polfi is a brand that is worth collecting, so look out for these small die-cast, they are great. I would like to add some historical notes about the brand, but I couldn’t find anything. Maybe somebody from Greece can give us some hints? I would love to hear more about this toy manufacturer.

FACTS AND FIGURES:

  • Name: RENAULT 17
  • Scale: 1:55
  • Year: Around 1977

#981 CHRYSLER QUARTETT – AMERICAN DREAM CARS (PROMOTIONAL) (2001)

This excellent deck of cards was probably made in Austria around the year 2000, and shows 32 Chrysler cards with their usual technical details (number of cylinders, power, capacity/displacement and max. speed) plus an American flag with or without the Austrian flag near to it.

Some Chrysler models were actually manufactured in Austria, and most accurately in the Eurostar factory in Graz between 1990 and 2002. I suspect this deck of cards might have been a gift for Chrysler customers in Austria or maybe even for Eurostar employees in the year 2001, as they started producing the PT Cruiser and Voyager (the 4th generation, shown in card B1) models that same year and this set was purchased in a flea market in this city. Note also that there are no marking or indications of manufacturer, barcode, year or anything else, and the pictures used all belong to the official Chrysler photographic archive. The text is written in German.

Just one year later, after the manufacturing of 50,000 units of the first model mentioned above, the plant was closed. The process was, for each car unit, around 2,000 dollar more expensive that it would have been in Mexico, so the plant was sold to Magna Steyr, and no more Chryslers were assembled in Austria ever since.

The deck is beautifully designed in clean white with minimalistic style on both sides of each card and in addition to the 2001 models, there are a family with classic Chryslers (Family H), racing cars (Family G) and a few other models, which, to my knowledge, were never available in the European markets.

  • Name: CHRYSLER AMERICAN DREAM CARS
  • Year: 2001
  • Company: Unknown Manufacturer (probably Austria)
